In his poem The Wanderlust, Robert William Service laments, “The Wanderlust has got me…by the belly-aching fire, / By the fever and the freezing and the pain; / By the darkness that just drowns you, by the wail of home desire, / I’ve tried to break the spell of it – in vain.” He ends this verse by stating, “Yet there’s no rest or peace for me, imperious it drums, / The Wanderlust and I must follow it.” Wanderlust is defined as a strong, innate desire or longing to rove or wander. When one engages in wanderlust, he or she is compelled to travel with a definite purpose; it is not aimless meandering. The overpowering urge to travel from place to place is fueled by an ongoing desire to find something greater. The excitement comes from not knowing what will be encountered; the fulfillment comes from the joy of discovery.
It is this spirit of exploration and discovery that is at the heart of The Wanderlust Theater Company. We are a Los Angeles-based, non-profit ensemble of artists who are dedicated to the common desire of exploring the human condition and experience, which serves as the basis of our own wanderlust. Our destinations will be the plays that we select and will be as varied and diverse as the members of our ensemble, yet we will use the American landscape of plays as our roadmap.
At Wanderlust Theater Company, our goal is to challenge ourselves by producing compelling, contemporary pieces. It is our hope that our productions will move, motivate, provoke, educate, enlighten, and inspire our audiences, who are our partners on this journey. As a theater ensemble, we seek to find new works and re-examine established works with the hopes of presenting exhilarating theatrical productions that capture audiences’ imaginations and satisfies their own sense of wanderlust.
